Delight = take great pleasure in "For in these I delight," says the LORD
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 9:23-24
Not wisdom, not might, not riches: God is not impressed with our gifts, strengths, or abilities. Via Jeremiah He instructed us to not "boast" of them. "Halal" is the Hebrew word used in this passage, and yes, it is the beginning of Hallelujah. It literally means to shine. It also means to celebrate, praise, glory, clamor loudly. I love the contrast in these verses: rather than highlight our wisdom, strength, riches, we are to celebrate and boast in these two aspects of reality:
1. that we understand the Lord. "sakal" is to be prudent, consider, wisely understand,
have insight into.
2. that we know the Lord. "yada" is to know by experience, perceive, see, discern.
Knowing God personally, having experiential encounters with the living Lord, and gaining insight into his character and behavior -- that's worth bragging about.
Yea verily, we need exponentially more steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in our fractured culture today. Many clamor for these in our cities, some peacefully, some not so much. The ugly truth is that there is a dearth of love, justice and righteousness in 2020 USA. And God practices these qualities. Conclusion: you and I need to get a clue, boast about God's character, not ours, and pray daily that his personality will become increasingly known and understood in our land. The ultimate answer for our nation is the Ultimate One. May God's love, God's justice, and God's righteousness be known and experienced. The primary way our culture will "see" this is in how you and I live and treat people. We are the re-presenters of God's personality. Gulp.
And when we live like Jesus lived, his delight, his great pleasure rests on us. Woohoo!
