Falling, I'm falling...
"The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand"
“He told me he’d just wanted to turn around,” said Craig Croteau, a witness in Quincy, Mass. The driver of a dump truck loaded with gravel decided that a two-story parking garage was the place to do it. The garage wasn’t engineered for a load that heavy, and the truck broke a seam in the concrete and fell through to the lower level. Police say the unnamed driver was following his GPS navigator, but it had taken him on a “No Trucks Allowed” road, so he was trying to get back to the highway. Buildings attached to the garage were evacuated until a crane could lift the truck out of the hole.
The apostle Peter reminded Christians dispersed around the Mediterranean world: "Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall" 2 Peter 1:10. The seven qualities Peter listed are ones we are urged to "add to our faith." One way to keep from "falling" is to heed the "No Trucks Allowed" signs posted along the way. Regular, systematic intake of God's Word provides warnings, admonitions for followers of Jesus. As we are filled with God's Spirit and Scripture, we can "admonish one another" as brothers and sisters. I love the promise of the author of Proverbs 24:16 "For the righteous man/woman falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity."
These days are indeed times of calamity. As you and I soak in Scripture, seek the Spirit's fullness, and fellowship regularly with other believers, we will not fall. And if we do, He will assist us to rise up, again to walk in the light and truth of Jesus Christ.
