REMINDERS IN OUR WALK WITH CHRIST

“I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.  I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder.”  2 Peter 1:12-13

Reminders, though sometimes annoying, are a necessary part of life.  We forget so much so quickly, so easily.  Peter reminded dispersed Christ-followers of a few basic concepts in walking out their salvation in his second letter.  Similarly, let me remind you…

We all wrestle with sin of various types and kinds.  Paul reminded Roman believers of this basic idea:  “So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live” Romans 8:12-13…to those in Colosse, he wrote, “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.  In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away” Colossians 3:5-8…to Ephesian believers, “you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” Ephesians 4:21-23.

Put to death the deeds of the body – put to death what is earthly in you  – put off your old self and put on the new self.  Though our position is seated with Christ, crucified, buried and raised with Him, our condition is a constant struggle with sin, some of which is deeply embedded in our character.

Key reminders I discovered from the Pure Desire ministry, adapted from the Genesis Process by Michael Dye:  We tend to relapse into our most besetting sins along this scale, titled the F.A.S.T.E.R. Relapse Awareness Scale.

F =  Forgetting Priorities: we believe our circumstances, stop relying on God

A =  Anxiety: we listen to our fears and yield to their emotions

S =  Speeding Up: we try to outrun anxiety, usually the beginning of depression

T =  Ticked Off: we get adrenaline highs from anger and aggression

E =  Exhausted: coming down from adrenaline high, our depression increases

R =  Relapse: we return to the place we swore we would never go again

And from my 12-Step friends, we are reminded that relapsing, sinking back into sinful habits most often occur when we are H.A.L.T = Hungry, Angry. Lonely, or Tired.
Reminder from Jesus:  “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light”  Matthew 11:28-30. The antidote is coming to Jesus, resting in His presence and embrace; donning his yoke, replacing religious works with simple trust and obedience.  We are born again to live free by God’s empowering Spirit, more than conquerors bonded to the steadfast love of Christ.   Pastor Perry Floyd
