WHO YA GONNA LISTEN TO?

WHO YA GONNA LISTEN TO??

“Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd.  Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.  He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”   Luke 8:19-21

An actual life-and-death crisis is described in Isaiah 7:1-2: “When Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it. Now the house of David was told, “Aram has allied itself with Ephraim”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken, as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.”

What a picture! Hearts shaken like the trees in the forest.  I’ve been there, so have you.  Bad news, a diagnosis, a late night phone call, a summons to the “office,” all can produce shuddering hearts. The Lord God sent Prophet Isaiah with a message to King Ahaz, “Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm and don’t be afraid. Do not lose heart because of these two smoldering stubs of firewood—because of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.  Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s son have plotted your ruin, saying,  “Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.”  Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says: It will not happen.”

The stark comparison was and is notable–the kings said it is over for Ahaz and Yahweh’s people.  God said it will not happen, you are safe under my care.  He gave Isaiah the clear future of the attacking kings (not good) and a sign of his protection over Ahaz and Judah…both came to pass.

The point for them, and us is this: when in a crisis, to whom we listen is critical. The voice to which we turn and focus upon will determine our future.  We will usually hear the accuser’s voice; we will experience the clutches of fear; our own hearts may shake violently.  But if we hone in on  “Yet this is what the Sovereign LORD says…” and follow whatever direction He gives, we will emerge, as Paul wrote, more than conquerors through him who loved us.

When the panic button blinks furiously, who ya gonna listen to?  When you’re up against it, crunch time, who ya gonna listen to?  When crisis seems to be your middle name, who ya gonna listen to?  Keep your nose in The Book, yield to The Spirit’s filling consistently, walk in accountable community, and like Ahaz of old, watch Faithful God keep his promises.  Jesus claimed we who hear and practice God’s word are his family!
