DON'T FORGET HIS BENEFITS...

“Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.” Isaiah 40:10

Many jobs come with “bennies,” benefits on top of salary or wages; often these benefits are crucial and helpful to the one receiving them. One of David’s Prayers/Songs/Psalms, the one we call Psalm 103, includes outstanding and awesome benefits of knowing God and following Jesus Christ…

PSALM 103:1-5 “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.”

Jesus gave his men (and us) a warning and a promise just before he was arrested , tried and crucified: “ I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” John 16:33. We do well to cling to Jesus with all our strength, to abide in him as our source of life—we recognize that tribulation in this world comes to Christ-followers. We also do well to remember (forget not) all his benefits. Hebrew “gemool” is rendered benefits in Psalm 103:2. It can be translated reward, recompense or benefit. Remember these, tattoo them in your soul:

1) He forgives all our sins 2) He heals all our diseases 3) He redeems our lives from the pit 4) He crowns us with steadfast love and mercy 5) He satisfies us with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagle’s

The remainder of Psalm 103 is replete with blessings, promises, descriptions of God’s wonderful character. It is, in my estimation, a “TOP 10” chapter in the Old Testament. These first five verses, however, are worth our continual focus—read them, sing them, memorize them, meditate on them until they are inculcated in your mind and heart. Claim them and expect them as you follow our Lord Jesus!

Grateful for the bennies, Pastor Perry Floyd
