OPEN OUR EYES O LORD

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. ISAIAH 43:18-19

There is “seeing” and there is “perceiving.” Seeing is physical, perceiving is mental. Something can be true or obvious and yet not perceived. Several Scriptural examples of seeing and perceiving:

Genesis 3:7  Then the eyes of both [Adam & Eve ] were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

Numbers 24:31 Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, with his drawn sword in his hand. And he bowed down and fell on his face.

2 Kings 6:17  Then Elisha prayed and said, “O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.” So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

Luke 24:30-31 .When Jesus was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight.

Ephesians 1:17-18  [ I pray ] that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened…

To see and not perceive is extremely common—one definition of perception is the process or state of being aware of something.. Like me, you may often be walking around unaware. There are insights and understandings, perceptions that come only as God’s Spirit reveals them to us. Paul explained this clearly in 1 Corinthians 2:6-16. We do well to be familiar with this passage..

I commend this prayer to all who follow Jesus Christ: Open my eyes, Dear Jesus—aid me to see AND perceive what is actually going on. Enlighten the eyes of my heart in order that I may know my hope, my rich inheritance, and the power which indwells my body via Your Spirit. Thank you!
