WHAT REALLY COUNTS...

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” Galatians 5:13

The Pauline letter to Galatian Christ-followers was part rebuke, part correction, part instruction. He came against the Judaizers claim that to be a follower of Jesus as Messiah, one must also practice Judaism, following the Mosaic Law and in particular experiencing circumcision. Two verses to buttress his argument:

“ For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love….For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.” Galatians 5:6. 6:15. The verb Paul used twice for “counts” is “iskooow,” translated to be strong, have power, to be a force. In other words, what really matters or counts to those who know and follow Jesus Christ is not being good, following the Law, obeying the rules, checking off boxes to be seen as a “good Christian.” What is crucial, Paul wrote, is two-fold—faith working through love and a new creation.

These are valid relevant guidelines for 21st century disciples. The priorities in our lifestyle must be trusting God, loving Him and people well, plus receiving and living the transformed life which God the Holy Spirit brings about in a person’s soul. A short self-evaluation I ask me…and you:

  • HOW IS MY FAITH LEVEL? DO I TRUST GOD WITH ALL MY ISSUES OF LIFE?

  • TO WHAT EXTENT DO I OPENLY LOVE GOD ASND PERSONS SACRIFICIALLY?

  • AM I EXPERIENCING INTERNAL TRANSFORMATION EXPRESSED IN BEHAVIOR & SPEECH?

Working through my priority list, Pastor Perry Floyd
