DOING LIFE ON PURPOSE

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me. Psalm 57:1-2 “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. Psalm 138:8

It is clear from the New Testament that Jesus lived a focused, purpose-driven life. Statements such as:

“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10.

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

“The Son of Man came to seek and save that which was lost.” Luke 1.9:10.

“The reason the Son of God appeared was to take away sin.” 1 John 3:5

“The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8

I remember well when as a 19-year-old I survived a one-pickup crash in which I was not scratched, though the truck I was driving flipped and was totaled. That very day my Mother wisely commented, “You’d better find out why you’re alive.” Within two weeks I surrendered my life and goals to the Lord Jesus Christ. Within six weeks, Paul’s life purpose statement in Acts 20:24 became my life’s purpose. For more than 50 years I have attempted to live by that overarching guideline. My purpose.

Peter, in describing Jesus’ ministry to Cornelius and other Gentiles, said, “…how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him” Acts 10:38. He went about doing good. So, Jesus was a powerful anointed do-gooder. Several times the Apostles Paul and Peter exhorted Christ-followers to live by that identical purpose.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them Ephesians 2:10

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

“Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation” 1 Peter 2:12

There are six references in Titus 2-3 to believers “doing what is good.” The Lord Jesus in his sermon on the Mount instructed disciples, “You are the light of the world…In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that hey may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” Matthew 5:14, 16

The point is that we as disciples and followers can and must live “on purpose.” Our daily choices are intentionally and strategically done as good works to further the gospel and expand God’s Kingdom. All glory is to and for Him. I commend my Mother’s exhortation to us all—You’d better find out why you’re alive!
