Make an Appointment with Papa

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

As a septuagenarian, I choose to fill my daily calendar with notes, meetings and appointments on paper rather than on my phone; call me old-fashioned! The only pictures on my phone are from the grocery, “Is this what you want?” The author of Hebrews encouraged people who follow Jesus to make regular appointments with our Heavenly Father!

Come BOLDLY is the instruction. We are commanded to come with CONFIDENCE to His throne. The previous verses in Hebrews chapter four clarify why this is possible…

  1. We have a High Priest, Jesus, who has by his sinless sacrifice opened the way for us.

  2. Jesus is sympathetic and compassionate, as he has faced in flesh our same temptations and weaknesses, yet with not a single failure.

  3. Mercy and Grace await us at Papa’s throne, not condemnation or judgment. When we have needs, God is ready and waiting to help.

Can I get an AMEN. a WOW, a WOOHOO? He is no angry, ready-to-punish God. This is Yahweh who described Himself to Moses in Exodus 34:6-7: “The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin…”

Once a Christ-follower understands the invitation, we flock to His throne of grace. We make constant and consistent “appointments with Papa.” Face it, life itself provides a plethora of problems, troubles, trials and temptations. Both the Hebrew and Greek words translated “trouble, distress, afflictions” can literally be translated “squeezed, tightened, narrowed.” When squeezed, we may run to Father God’s side to receive “help in time of need.” Who wouldn’t go? Shame bids us stay away—self-pity and condemnation are difficult barriers. Fear of rejection from false theological pictures of God delay, detour, or halt us. Faith and trust in God’s revealed character is required to make an appointment with Papa. The blood of Jesus Christ has paved the way to help from above.

Ponder, meditate and memorize Paul’s bold declaration, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2. Beloved, let us often go and linger at Papa God’s feet!
