WHO YA GONNA CALL ??

Ray Parker Jr. wrote the theme song for the 1984 movie, Ghostbusters, with its catchy lyric “Who Ya Gonna Call  –  Ghostbusters!”  The question is fitting when we are filled with anxious thoughts, though the answer is far different.  Israel was at one point (of many) of oppression in their history; crushing burdens were upon them. An unknown psalmist wrote a song of lament and plea for divine justice against those oppressors which we call Psalm 94.

In twenty-three verses the Psalmist calls on Yahweh to free His people and execute justice on the wicked evil oppressors.  Verses 17-19 are a cool drink of water in an otherwise angry and desperate petition:

“If the Lord had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence.  When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up. When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.”

Three fantastic promises and declarations regarding our God when evil men prevail.  God is our help–the Lord’s steadfast love holds us up in dangerous times, and His consolations bring joy and cheer.  The final sentence, verse nineteen, is worthy of examination, pondering and committing to memory. “Cares of my heart” can be translated “my anxious thoughts,” as in Psalm 139:23.  God’s “consolations” are His “compassion, solace—comfort, consolation.”  In other words, we are not alone in tumultuous painfilled times. God helps, holds and comforts us.

The presence of Christ is as near as our next breath; the comfort of God’s Spirit is everpresent to pour upon our hearts, and the overwatch of Father God does not cease.  When anxious thoughts attack, and they are nearly always lurking nearby, Psalm 94:19 is an antidote.  Jesus may have this psalm in mind when he uttered      "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” Matthew 6:34.
