GOING TO THE "GODLY GYM"

If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 1 TIMOTHY 4:6-8

Paul advised young pastor Timothy to avoid “doctrines of demons, godless myths and old wives’ tales” that lead God’s people away from the truths of Scripture. To focus on biblical teachings was the “these things” of 1 Tim. 4:6. Paul wrote that to do this this would train Timothy in the “words of the faith and good doctrine,”

Three times in the ESV translation of verses six through eight Paul used trained, train, training. It is the Greek “gymnadzow” meaning to exercise naked or vigorously.. We derive our word gymnasium from this. Training is exercising. He compared physical training to spiritual training. Physical training has value, but godliness training is so much better, because it has value both now and forever.

Gymnadzow is also used in Hebrews twice: “for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. (5:14), and “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it (12:11).

The result of spiritual training is increased godliness, growing more like our God. If that is my desire, if it is your passion, then off to the godly gym we go! In practical terms, it means to practice spiritual disciplines. For two thousand years followers of Jesus Christ have hard-wired certain habits into our daily schedules and lifestyles. John Mark Comer defined and outlined nine of these disciplines in his book PRACTICING THE WAY":

“Spiritual disciplines are intentional practices designed to foster spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with Christ Jesus.  Dallas Willard, author of Spirit of the Disciplines, describes them as activities rooted firmly in biblical texts, through which we engage regularly to develop spiritual maturity.  Through his book Celebration of Discipline, Richard Foster introduces readers to the power of spiritual disciplines as essential tools for spiritual growth. And finally, according to Zondervan Academic, “The spiritual disciplines are the product of a synergy between divine and human initiative, and they serve us as means of grace insofar as they bring our personalities under the lordship of Christ and the control of the Spirit.”  In other words, spiritual disciplines aren’t just good habits. They’re sacred practices that intentionally align us with God’s will, creating space for the Holy Spirit to transform us from the inside out.
