RUNNING AWAY FROM, RUNNING TOWARD

“But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness” Timothy 6:11. “So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart” 2 Timothy 2:22.

I believe one’s life, priorities and values can be observed in what a person flees and pursues. What I run away from, or flee, elucidates one half of my life. What I run toward, or pursue, reveals the other half. Paul knew this well and so in both pastoral epistles to his “son in the faith” Timothy he used those key words.

In 1 Timothy 6 Paul urged Timothy to run away from greed and the love of money. In 2 Timothy 2 he commanded Timothy to run away from passions and desires that capture the hearts of the young. In both missives Paul contrasts fleeing with pursuing. Man of God, he urged Timothy, chase after / pursue six personal qualities of a godly leader — righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. In his next and last letter we have from Paul, he commanded Timothy to chase after / pursue four similar character qualities — righteousness, faith, love, and peace, He added in this context to pursue these qualities in a company of brothers and sisters — along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Psalm 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Proverbs 11:19 Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die.

Proverbs 15:9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but he loves him who pursues righteousness.

Proverbs 21:21
