PLACES WE ARE SAFEST

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1

You have heard or have said “I’m not in a good place right now.” Me too. Life presents difficult, often disturbingly painful situations to humans. It is helpful and hopeful to know there are “places where we are safest.” David wrote the song we call Psalm 27 out of a disturbingly painful situation. Was it time to panic, he must have wondered; indeed, fear and panic were actual options. He asked in verse one, “whom shall I fear? Of whom shall I be afraid? in verses four and five he listed five “places” where his relationship with God provided a measure of peace and safety. He did not need to fear because of these “places.” Nor do we! You and I do well to consider, ponder and emulate them:

“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.”
FIVE PLACEST THAT ARE THE SAFEST…

1) THE HOUSE OF THE LORDChurch buildings are considered to be sanctuaries, even in these hate crime days. Congregations of all religions have installed security protocols to protect people. Sad but true.

2) INQUIRING IN HIS TEMPLE — Holy Spirit now indwells and fills Christ-followers, making us the Temple of God. We are the Holy of holies, where God lives. Wherever we gather, Jesus promised to be among us. In small and large groups, folks experience safety with our brothers and sisters in Christ. To “gaze” on his beauty includes prayer and study. To inquire in his Temple can be translated to meditate. We are transformed into Jesus’ image as we worship, praise and think deeply on his character and words.

3) HIDDEN IN HIS SHELTER — God refers to himself as our “Hiding Place” three times in Psalms. Our lives are hidden in Christ, Paul wrote to Colossian disciples. His life, presence and power envelops us—and we are safe.

4) CONCEALED UNDER THE COVER OF HIS TENT — There is a sense in which we are “undercover” as we follow Jesus. His “tent” {think presence} conceals us. Redemption includes the concept of protection, covering. We are given weapons and armor in Christ. As we don and use them, we are concealed. Paul wrote that we are aware of and equipped to deal successfully against the methods or schemes of our enemy.

5) LIFTED HIGH UPON A ROCK — Military leaders prefer to fight from a high place. Lesser gods and demons take their positions on mountains and other high places. David expressed the idea that our position in God is high, on a steady and exalted place, a rock. We are safe there.

Psalm 27 is a wondrous chapter! Know it, sing it, meditate on it so that you may live free from fear, no matter the “place” you find yourself. “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7 Eliminating fear by living in safe places, Pastor Perry Floyd
